Pyrite (FeS₂) forms numerous sharp, well-defined cubic crystals with the typical striations on the faces. The brassy-gold metallic luster is very bright and stands out against the background of the matrix. Slight iridescence can be seen on some faces. The white, translucent calcite (CaCO₃) crystals are scattered among the pyrite cubes, creating a very pleasing color contrast.

Madan, in the Rhodope Mountains, is a mining district known for its lead and zinc deposits, and one of the Bulgarian localities most appreciated by collectors, particularly for associations of pyrite, calcite and other sulfides.

The piece is interesting from every angle and is ideal for those who collect pyrite, Bulgarian minerals or mineral associations.
