Pyrite and Quartz with Sphalerite - Madan, Bulgaria

Pyrite and Quartz with Sphalerite: Madan, Bulgaria

A beautiful specimen from the Madan mining district in the Rhodope Mountains, one of Bulgaria’s classic localities for sulfides. The standout feature is a cubic pyrite crystal of a gorgeous golden-yellow color, with the typical striations on its faces and iridescent reflections that shift with the light. The crystal sits proudly on top of the matrix and stands out strongly against the dark background.

Specimen size: 4x4x3,5 cm

Crystals: 13 mm

Surrounding it, a matrix of black, lustrous sphalerite rich in sparkling microcrystals, on which prismatic crystals of transparent quartz have grown. The contrast between metallic gold, glossy black and the transparency of the quartz makes the piece highly aesthetic and visually striking.
