Beautiful tooth of the famous white shark, from the USA. South Crolina.Exceptional of excellent quality, with an almost perfect hacksaw.
The white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is a vertebrate animal belonging to the phylum Chordata. It is a migratory species with a vast range distributed in many regions with temperate waters, present in almost all the oceans of the globe. Species at the top of the food chain belonging to the category "keystone species and top predator", playing an important role in maintaining the trophic dynamics of marine ecosystems. Being belonging to the Chondrichtyes class, they are not endowed with bones that are able to remain in the time following their death. Their skeleton is characterized by cartilage. Even if, through certain physical and chemical conditions, they allow their fossilization. It was believed that the ancestor of the white shark was the now famous Carcharocles megalodon (Agassiz 1843), probably the largest marine predator ever to exist on the planet, so much so that it was able to reach a length of 15 m based on the teeth found. For some years, its evolutionary line has been demonstrated. C. carcharias is the consequence of the evolution of Isurus hastalis. The fossil teeth with which the evolution of I. hastalis has been ascertained were found in the Chilean and Peruvian states, dated to about 8 - 4 million years ago. The transient species took the name of Carcharodon hubbelli, in the name of the scholar and researcher Dr. Gordon Hubbell.
